OPSWA Community Resources

Welcome to the OPSWA Community Resource Page. We built this page to assist the public in accessing care, as a resource for workers, and as a place to just get some answers. We intend to update and keep the content current as time permits.

What is the difference between a PSW (Personal Support Worker) and a caregiver (companion)?

What is the difference between a PSW (Personal Support Worker) and a caregiver (companion)?

PSWs provide personal care (aka care where the patient/client/resident requires physical touch, lift/transfers, feeding, bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene)

Companions provide assistance with everyday tasks. They cannot touch the patient/client/resident, perform lifts/transfers, feeding, bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene)

Is my PSW bound by the OPSWA rules/code of ethics/standards of practice?

Technically PSWs are not bound unless they are an OPSWA member, and have purchased membership. This is because PSWs are not yet regulated. The proposed date for PSW regulation is December 2023.

(The PSW Regulation – Bill 283)
