As a Personal Support Worker (PSW), you will help clients live more comfortably, safely and as independently as possible. Your skilled, compassionate support will also provide great assistance to family caregivers looking for a much needed break. The duties and responsibilities in this role include the following:

  • Assist clients with their daily living activities such as grooming, dressing and bathing
  • Help with meal planning and preparation
  • Assist with mobility and transfers
  • Light household duties including cleaning, laundry and washing dishes
  • Provision of special functions that have been taught, with respect to the client by a regulated health professional
  • Report changes in client behavior and condition
  • Recognize safety issues and follow safe work practices
  • Possess a compassionate and flexible nature, and a client-centered approach to care giving
  • Ability to travel between assignments by public transportation or by car
  • Available to work either Saturday or Sunday every 2nd weekend


To qualify for the Personal Support Worker role, you will need the following education, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Education – any one of the following is required o PSW certification from an approved and recognized educational institution OR
  • RN/RPN/DSW/HCA/Personal Attendant Certification OR
  • RN/RPN student with a minimum of 1 year of successful program completion
  • Foreign trained Nurse, Midwife or Physician
  • Graduate of a paramedic program
  • Experience and skills o 3 years of experience providing homemaking and/or personal support services, including care of seniors and children
  • Experience working in the community as a Personal Support Worker is an asset
  • Ability to read, write and speak English (equivalent to a Grade 10 level)
  • Knowledge and demonstrated commitment to client and family centered care
  • Use of proper body mechanics and successful completion of physical readiness test to ensure safe work practices are followed including mobility, transfers, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize safety concerns along with effective problem solving and decision making skills to safely service clients
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a computer and/or mobile device
  • Strong ability to work independently and work cooperatively with the care-giving team
  • Immunization for measles, rubella and varicella, and prophylaxic immunization of Hepatitis B is strongly urged. Must be screened for tuberculosis where required (i.e. long term care facility)
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification is a definite asset
  • Ability to speak a second language is a strong asset
